When the first Spanish explorers encountered the place we now call San Antonio, they wrote of its great beauty, pure waters, abundant wildlife, fertile soil and natural resources that would one day give rise to a great city.These areas the Spanish described are now mostly built upon. The river basin is now downtown. The low surrounding hills and expansive plains to the south are now occupied by buildings, streets and parking lots. True, we do still have some areas that have kept their natural value, and we assuage any regret for what was lost with the dividends of progress.
