Nestled in a community just south of downtown San Antonio, money is growing out of the ground.
Thanks to the Green Spaces Alliance, community gardens are springing up all over the city so neighbors can work together and cut their grocery bills in half.
"Fresh fruits and vegetables, if they're available, aren't affordable and, so, working in the garden with the labor of their hands, they have something they can bring home to their families," said Green Spaces Alliance's Executive Director Julie Koppenheffer.
It's a simple concept, but in this economy, it is making a big impact.
"As people lose jobs, this will put food on the table for people that don't have food," Koppenheffer said.
Not only can the community garden help you save money, it can help you earn a little. Plus, it's great on your body, and it tastes pretty good, too.
"Bringing people together, giving them healthy exercise, having parents work with children and grandchildren and sharing generational things. It gives them some healthy nutritional food that's good to eat that's affordable," said Koppenheffer. "That's affordable."
All the community garden costs is your time. If you would like a community garden in your neighborhood, all you need is volunteers, a piece of land, and a call to the Green Spaces Alliance. They can be reached by phone at (210) 222-8430 or by email: info@greenspacesalliance.org.
