Picture Your World Awards Ceremony at Rackspace
May 9, 2010 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Description:
Green Spaces Alliance of South Texas will hold the annual reception and awards presentation for its “Picture Your World” photography contest on Sunday, May 9th, from 2:00 to 4:00pm at the auditorium of Rackspace of San Antonio, 5000 Walzem Road (the former Windsor Park Mall location). The contest, open to youth 8 to18 years of age, drew 170 entries this year -- 113 in the 8 to 12 group and 57 in the 13 to 18 group.
Each entry comprises five digital photos of subjects ranging from wildlife and landscapes to textures and designs found on natural objects and scenes of people enjoying the diversity of nature. Images are judged by professional artists and photographers based on originality of subject matter, use of light, framing, and composition.
A total of $1200.00 in cash prizes will be awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in each of the two age groups, with twenty-four additional Honorable Mentions presented. All contestants and their families are invited to attend the exhibit of thirty professionally framed works. Additional guests may be accommodated for a small fee.
The competition is the season end for the very successful “Picture Your World” program, which consisted of 20 workshops during the 2009-2010 school year for both elementary groups during the week and a weekend program for other interested youth. A professional photographer and a professional naturalist guide the students in exploring their natural environment through the eye of a camera lens.
Workshop locations vary and include the Medina River Natural Area, Mitchell Lake Audubon Center, the San Antonio Botanical Gardens, Land Heritage Institute, Government Canyon State Natural Area, and Creekway Linear Parks.
The photos in this exhibit celebrate nature and celebrate youth, while documenting both the impact of humans on the environment and the potential for people to preserve and protect it. The “Picture Your World” Project is managed for Green Spaces Alliance by local art educator Sherry Christensen.
